May 1999 letter
Dear Inquirer:
The first few months of Long Island Secular Humanists' existence have been memorable and encouraging. From out of nowhere, literally, we have been able to publish a half dozen newsletters, now up to 8 pages long, with a number of contributing writers, and hold three monthly meetings, with attendance growing to over thirty persons per meeting. In addition, LISH has sent out press releases to the media and local politicians regarding issues close to home for humanists, providing, for the first time, a secular point of view from the local level.
Other projects in the planning stage include a virtual Freethought Library, a Robert G. Ingersoll memorial beach party this summer, an end-of-the-world dinner this winter (which may be held before or after the end of the world), and a youth program. Other ideas tossed around have been an essay program based on an ethical issue for area high schools, a public access TV show and the ultimate project, a Center For Inquiry.
Why is it important for LISH to continue? If one were to dispassionately look at the status of secular humanists in our society, things could hardly be worse. Humanists or secularism are often blamed somehow for every social ill no matter the evidence. Non-believers are still considered evil by much of the general public and the call for more religious intrusion into law and government grows every day. The public intolerance of humanists also means a degree of social isolation, and humanists need to know they are not alone. LISH seeks to address these issues by reaching out to the media, government and of course, to fellow humanists. LISH is proof of our existence, even to ourselves.
So far, LISH has survived on the personal contributions of a very few. However, to survive and grow, more must become involved. Postage for the newsletters and press releases can add up to a considerable amount every month, and guest speakers expect to have at the very least, costs reimbursed and perhaps an honorarium. Fees are needed to secure town picnic areas, to incorporate, and to implement a youth program. Just imagine what will be necessary to realize a Center for Inquiry!
For the moment, LISH will walk, and not run, and a modest annual family membership of $35 per year will serve as a membership fee, although one may donate more if so motivated. For those who are unable to participate in LISH events, $10/year will secure a monthly mailing of the newsletter, with the first six issues provided free. Issues already provided will count among the free issues.
Benefits of LISH membership will include mailed newsletters, invitations to LISH events. use of the virtual Freethought Library, voting for LISH officers, and the birth of a secular humanist community on Long Island. Please fill in the enclosed form and mail it in the envelope provided to LISH.
Thanks, Gerry Dantone, founder, LISH [to top]
